Pakistan – what am I doing here?!?
Well that’s an interesting question I was asked many times so far. I am here in the country as the first AIESEC trainee of AIESEC in Pakistan!!! They now exist for one year and do great work so far!
Pakistan is an amazing, challenging, interesting country with its culture and religion – so it definitely was a very good idea to come here. And it is not what the media tells us Europeans about it… people are very very hospitable and friendly.
I am working in an NGO (non-governmental-organization) called CARE (Cooperation for Advancement Rehabilitation and Education) that is active in the field of education. They build up and develop schools in and around Lahore. I am working in the Teacher Training Center that this organization runs for the development of the teachers and their teaching skills. This is quite interesting, many things can happen in this area to improve. I work together with teachers to train them, support them, give them feedback. This is in many parts very challenging, because often there are even the simple basic things missing.
Education is quite a big problem here in the country. Illiteracy rate is very high at about 50 %. Government does not support it very well. There is not a good working school system like we have; not every child has the chance to go to school. Richer people send their children to private schools, poor people often don’t send their children to school at all. The government schools are in a very bad shape…so CARE tries to give children of every kind a chance of education.

Hello Eva,
Just happened to come across your blog. Do you know what kind of response CARE is planning for the quake? Thanks.
